From a very young age, my life has been host to many ghostly experiences. My mom always said that as a toddler I would tell her about people who would come out of my closet at night. But apart from the what-was-that-out-of-the-corner-of-my-eye situations, I never really came into contact with anything I could say with any certainty was paranormal. That was until my trip to New England, when my family and I stayed at the Mount Washington Hotel during the summer of 2008.
Anyone familiar with the show Ghost Hunters on the Sci-Fi Channel will know that the Mount Washington Hotel is rumored to be haunted, but I had never seen the show, nor had any interest in ghosts. My mom had informed us, though, that reviews of the place reported unexplainable phenomena, such as lights turning on and off, apparitions, and the like. We basically laughed this off and didn't give much thought to it.
But it didn't take long at all before we gave those stories some credit. We had just entered our room, not even five minutes after arriving at the hotel. I decided to take a shower after the long car ride. I hop into the shower, turn on the water, and I hear a noise. It was loud, so I knew it had happened in the bathroom, but it was muffled, unlike the crash of something heavy. I peeked out from behind the shower curtain. All the towels in the bathroom (think hotel bathroom; lots of towels) had fallen off their racks and were heaped around the floor.
The door was shut tight and locked, so it wasn't any of my family. It wasn't wind; there were no drafts or windows in the bathroom. And it wasn't me, as I had been in the shower for nearly half a minute before anything fell down. The only thing I could think of were those stories mom had told us as we drove up to the hotel...
I believe that I had an encounter with a ghost that day. It was the same day that my mom introduced me to the ideas I now have about spirits, which you can read in my "About Me" blog entry. Please, feel free to comment the story or share your own, similar encounters!
